Greenland revisited
19 de agosto de 2005
On the boat from Nuuk to Narsarsuaq I met a guy with an acoustic guitar. It was a small group actually. They were playing cards and passing the guitar around.
My heart trembled as I heard one of the guys attempting to play some Metallica tunes. After some cups of tea, I asked permission to play their guitar. I strongly impressed them by playing the intro of Nothing Else Matters without a mistake. I stopped before spoiling the effect by attempting to sing.
Later on we went to their cabin and I continued with Master of Puppets. They didn't speak any English and I didn't and still don't speak any Inuit. They were watching me as if hypnotised. I was extremely happy because watching them I saw myself about 10 years ago, learning Metallica riffs note-by-note by stopping the tape on each played note and trying to absorb and memorise what I've just heard. They probably did the exact same.
10 years ago I wouldn't have dreamt that one day I'd have the good fortune to travel to Greenland AND carry a copy of Metallica under the microscope in my backpack as casual lecture for a three-week-long trip in the 'middle of nowhere' which Greenland meant to me back then.
He got off the boat somewhere along the way. Before we split, I gave him the book as a wholehearted present. He took it unbelievingly but visibly happy. His eyes were laughing silently and his friends were laughing out loud and jumping around him. I gave him the |m/ - 0 - |m/ sign and he returned me the gesture.
I didn't take any pictures. I don't know what his name is. I never saw him since. I trust he will have found what he searched for in that book, and more, just as I found what I didn't know I needed in both Greenland AND the music of Metallica.
Who knows, maybe our paths or aft waters will cross again one day. Maybe not. But now I know for sure someone in Greenland is looking forward to the 6 months of darkness to come.
