Fuck you, James!

I visited New York last year and aside from the fantastic trip itself I've also been headbanging in the first row at the Metallica show in New Jersey. It was my 4th Metallica show. I was standing about 2 meters away from James and I fixed him until he grinned back at me. I felt connected and the very realism of the moment made it surreal. The more surprised I was when I heard the dude headbanging next to me screaming at the top of his lungs: "Fuck you, James!".

It sounded like he really meant it and for a fraction of a fraction of a second James looked surprised, too, but minded his business like he didn't hear anything, only to suddenly put on a mean face and shout back at the dude 'Whatchyousay!?!?!?' about 2 seconds later. Then he laughed and walked away. Then we all laughed and felt even more connected.

At the end of the show I was lucky enough to catch 3 guitar picks and Geesche, my wife, who was there with me, caught another three. Cool, ey? :-) I caught three black ones, Geesche caught three white ones, just in case anyone's looking for signs of some sort. I'm still using the picks today. They helped me get rid of that bad habit of losing guitar picks.

Now, I came across these sites today: creepingdeathonline.com, damageinc.net, disposableheroes.ca, nutellica.de and there's a lot more here and there.

They're all websites of Metallica tribute bands. And they made me think about what I wanna do. So I realised I never wanted to start a Metallica tribute band and I feel the need to make it clear again: I wouldn't play guitar today if it weren't for Metallica and I wouldn't even speak English today if it weren't for Metallica. I only started to teach myself English as a kid because I just had to know what the hell that guy was so pissed off about. Turned out it wasn't that hard to understand, after all.

So anyway... it's clear, I guess, that Metallica means quite a lot to me. But at the end of the day I guess I'm more important to me than them. And as much as I enjoy playing their songs, I don't think I'll ever be able to invest that much time and energy into creating a perfect replica of Metallica. What for? I think there's enough of them out there, already. And they're probably doing a better job at it than I would ever do.

I'm still interested in meeting a drummer who can play Metallica songs, though, 'cause that would give us a great starting point, but that's no requirement. I'm currently playing Metallica songs in my so-called "studio". There's a computer playing MIDI files in there. I named it Lars Midiman Ulrich. In its default settings it has the "loop" switch activated, so at the end of each song it acts like the real Lars: 'Hey, let's do that again! ' and then, without waiting for an answer: 'one, two, three, four...'. :-) Maybe I'll give you a sample of it, one of these days.

But I guess the essence of what I've learned today is that it's time for me to stop fooling around playing Metallica songs in my room, and concentrate on my own half-written-never-performed-songs.

So I guess this is my way of saying:

"Fuck You, James! - I've got my own songs to write, so why don't you get the fuck out of my head!

 Love and Respect,
 Octavian."
